You don’t need that dessert

One of the things I quickly learned as I started cutting calories was all the sweets I would eat needed to be removed from my diet.

Some things you just need to let go!

To keep your calories down there is no way to fit sugary sweets into a diet around two thousand calories.

One of the favorite things I use to go out just to get three or four times a week was a 7-eleven chocolate éclair. They are about 6 inches long and delicious cream filled goodness.

The problem is they are also about 450 calories for just one of them. I try to keep my meals around 300 to 500 calories so eating a dessert that is equal to an entire meal is not helpful to a healthy lifestyle.

Another favorite of mine was Little Debbie snacks.

I remember I use to stop in a convenience store from time to time to buy a coke and I would get two or three Little Debbie snacks.

Now I can’t believe how naïve I was to wonder why I couldn’t lose weight. I saw one of my favorite Little Debbie snacks in the store the other day. It was their oatmeal cream pies. I looked at the calories of one pie and saw that it has 330 calories for one pie.

I would eat that plus two other snacks, plus a coke. In other words I was having more calories in my snacking than I have in my meals now. No wonder I was overweight.

Some foods do not promote a healthy lifestyle

I know desserts can be some of the most delicious foods but they are also the very thing that makes the difference from being healthy or being unhealthy.

Like the sodas I talked about earlier, desserts are full of sugar which are nothing but empty calories.

My eldest son recently posted how he backed off from consuming sugar for just a month and in that month he dropped his weight almost to what he weighed in high school and his cholesterol levels went from very high to within the healthy range.

Dare to be a Daniel

This reminds me of the story in the Bible about Daniel and his friends. They were taken to a foreign land and put in training to serve the king.

Daniel and his friends were provided with food from the king’s delicacies and wine. In other words, these foods were probably very fatty and sweet food.

Daniel didn’t want to defile himself with these sweets so he asked for a test. He asked that he and his friends be fed with “pulse” as the old King James Bible translates it. Pulse was any type of seed plant such as peas, beans or lentils.

The test would be whether he and his friends appearance would be better or not than the others in their group after 10 days. Daniel and his friends would eat bean soup and water, the others would eat the king’s delicacies and wine.

In just ten days it became obvious that Daniel and his friends looked better and much healthier than the others. What you choose to eat does make a difference.

Deciding to cut out desserts may be one of the best decisions you can make for yourself and your health.

I cut out desserts for the first year of my weight loss journey. Now I allow myself an occasional donut or something, but if I have a dessert, I don’t have another for at least a month.

Actually I have lost my appetite for desserts for the most part. They have become too sweet. I would much prefer chicken or something solid instead.

I’m sure the same will happen to you if you pass on the dessert, plus you will love the results.
