The health benefits of cabbage
When I was young I wouldn’t touch cabbage, except for coleslaw which as a kid I didn’t realize was cabbage, plus it was sweet. As I have grown older I have acquired a taste for cabbage and I’m glad I did because it is one of the best foods for a healthy lifestyle.
Cabbage is a part of the type of vegetables known as cruciferous vegetables which also include broccoli, cauliflower, kale, bok choy and Brussels sprouts.
Just as the other vegetables in this category of plants, cabbage is not only low in calorie so you can eat as much as you want, it is also filled with vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium and Potassium which benefits the body in many ways.
Since it is packed with an abundance of vitamins and minerals cabbage has been called a superfood due to its many health benefits. Cabbage is said to help detox to body, improve digestion and aid in weight loss. Like carrots, cabbage is considered good for eye health. It is also an anti-inflammatory and is a good food to eat to help prevent cancer.
My experimenting with the recipe
Since cabbage is so low in calories I searched and tried a few recipes, some I may share later. I also experimented making my own dish. I started with just a cabbage, an onion and a few polish sausages. After a while I added a few other ingredients until I think I hit upon a very tasty dish.
I recently made the dish with the ingredients below and it yielded 7 servings and calculated out to 350 calories per serving.
The ingredients
1 whole medium cabbage, chopped
1 yellow onion, chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic
5 Bar-S polish sausages
3 medium potatoes, chopped
1 pound 93% lean ground beef
Salt
Pepper
Hot pepper flakes
½ cup Water

Directions
To make this I use a Saladmaster wok, but a large pot of some kind should work as well. You need something large enough for the ingredients. You could probably make this in a slow cooker as well if you have the extra time.
First put the ground beef, chopped onion and garlic into the pot and cook them until the beef is brown and the onions are translucent.
Then add the salt and pepper, as well as the hot pepper flakes to taste. Be careful how much hot pepper flakes you put in because when you get the leftovers out the next day the food is going to be spicier then when you cooked it.
After the salt, pepper and hot pepper flakes add the polish sausage, potatoes and cabbage. By this time the pot should be pretty full. To prevent burning you may need to add a little water to the bottom of the pot.
Once all the ingredients are added leave the pot on medium and wait 30-45 minutes, occasionally stirring, until the potatoes and cabbage is cooked.
That is it, a simple, healthy recipe. Let me know if you tried it and what your thoughts are.
Have a wonderful and blessed day!
